How it works

Inside an API 650 storage tank.

A vertical cylindrical tank with a fixed cone roof, built course by course on a concrete ring wall. Set the liquid level and watch the float-and-tape gauge follow it, while the panel works out how thick each shell course must be.

Shell courses follow the API 650 one-foot method, td = 4.9·D·(H − 0.3)·G / Sd + CA and tt = 4.9·D·(H − 0.3) / St (mm, with H measured from the bottom of each course); the larger governs, never less than 5 mm for diameters under 15 m, rounded up to a stock plate. Volume, bottom pressure (ρgh) and the bottom course's stress follow the level. Values are illustrative; every tank is designed to its own data.

The level moves the float, the gauge counter and the first four rows. The courses below are designed for the full design level, bottom course first: td and tt in millimetres, and each course takes the next stock plate at or above the larger, never under 5 mm.
