How it works

Heat before the pressure drops.

When gas is let down from pipeline pressure it cools, about half a degree for every bar. An indirect heater warms it first: a burner fires into a U-shaped tube in a bath of water, and the gas passes through a coil in the same water, never near the flame.

Thermometer and gauge needles: what the model readsGas flowBurner flame, seen in the sight glassIllustrative duty: 10,000 Sm³/h of natural gas (2.00 kg/s) at 60 bar g and 10 °C, let down to the pressure you set. Joule-Thomson cooling is taken as 0.5 °C per bar and the gas must stay at or above 5 °C after the valve. Heater duty Q = m · cp · ΔT with cp = 2.4 kJ/(kg·K); firing = Q ÷ 0.8 thermal efficiency. At 20 bar g that is 72 kW into the gas and 90 kW of fuel, with the bath near 43 °C. The coil passes 45 % of the bath-to-gas temperature difference to the gas. The bath's hours-long warming is shown in seconds. Real heaters are sized for their own gas, pressures and site.
